HISTORY OF DUNDALK FIRE STATION

Prior to 1919, fire protection to the Dundalk area was provided by the fire stations located in Highlandtown and Canton, which, at that time, were still part of Baltimore County. On January 1, 1919, the Highlandtown and Canton stations were absorbed by the City of Baltimore in the major annexation.

During 1920, the County started construction of a new fire and police station in Dundalk. During the construction of the new station, the newly organized firefighters and their engine (designed Engine 116) were housed in an old wood framed structure at the Sparks Farm, which was located in the vicinity of Northship Road. It was reported that during the winter season, it was common for snow to drift across the beds in which the firefighters slept!

In 1921, the personnel occupied the new station at Shopping Place and Market Place, next to The Dundalk Building. The fire department stayed at that location until April 25, 1949, at which time, they moved to a new station at Sollers Point Road and Dunmanway. Within the following year, Dundalk received a new replacement fire engine and also added an ambulance and ladder truck.

A second engine was placed in service in 1952 and the ladder truck was transferred to the Towson Station in 1955. On November 6, 1986, ground was broken for a major expansion and complete renovation of the station.
