Money Saving Tips

  1. Just say NO!

  2. Learn the four magic words:  We Can't Afford It!

  3. Reuse and Recycle.

  4. Avoid temptation:  Get off mailing lists for catalogs, sales, etc.

  5. Challenge yourself NOT to pay full price (but still buy American!).

  6. Use Coupons.  Sure, they can be a pain, but if you use a $0.40 coupon on an item that is already on sale, and at a store that doubles your coupons, this can really add up!  Don't fall into the trap, though of using small coupons on higher-ticket items that are only minimally discounted.  It's tricky, but it can be fun and worth it.  Click here for online coupon tips.

  7. Lower your standards!  Use the internet to search sites on "frugal" and "cheap."

  8. Use Direct Deposit.
If you get two paychecks, consider tucking the smaller one away for something big later on.

  9. Automatically pay into your IRA, Roth IRA, 401(k), etc.  If you set up your payments to your own special savings accounts automatically, you are MUCH less likely to "skip a payment" when funds get tight.  If you miss a payment or two, chances are you'll never make it up,  and lose in a bigger way in the long run.

  10. If you get extra or unexpected money (tax refunds, collect old debts, etc.), put it aside (in a separate savings account or buy a CD), or pay off debts ... wait to "splurge" until after you're out of debt.

  11. Challenge family members on finding/saving money.
Make it a game to collect $5 bills, silver dollars, dimes, and nickels, etc. ... and then save/invest the results.

  12. Evaluate your spending habits, and put them in the bigger picture.
Do you spend $2 a day on fancy coffees?  That can add up to over $700 a year!  Knowing that is enough to get your blood pressure up without caffeine!

  13. Besides your health, saving money (for education, retirement, travel) is a great reason to quit expensive habits.
Cigarettes?  Alcohol?  Doughnuts?  Fancy dining?  Chocolate?
    (woops, scratch that last one!)

  14. Don't carry loose change; small bills and pocket change easier to spend, and harder to track.
You may be less likely to break a $20 for a candy bar.
