RETIRED FIRE FIGHTER IN NEED
OF A KIDNEY
January 25, 2010 - Update from the Ludwigs:
Jack was officially listed on the
transplant list on January 7. We are still hoping and praying for a
live donor, as that has the best chance of success.
He is still dealing with a lot of health problems related to 85% of
his kidneys not functioning, so we're praying for this donation to
be soon. But we also know God's timing is perfect.
Thanks for staying in touch; we
appreciate it.
Mel & Jack Ludwig

November 30, 2009 - Update from the Ludwigs:
Thanks for the prayers.
Progress - he's doing ok, but dialysis
is a temporary fix. FYI - it only replaces 15% of your normal kidney
function, so you deal with the problems of not having 85% functioning
kidney.
We have had a few folks who have said
they would go through the process to see if they are a match, but no one
from the fire department yet. I think most people are scared and have
antiquated ideas about how this is done and the recovery. The first
person was not a match; one other is in the process, and one other has
the paperwork.
I would appreciate it if you would put
out the same message (as below) again.Mel & Jack Ludwig

Dear Members,
Many of you will remember FS Jack
Ludwig who retired from Sparrows Point Station 57 in 2003, with almost 20 years
of service to Baltimore County. We received the email below from his family
just this morning, and ask that you post the letter and sincerely
consider their request.

We would appreciate it if you would
disseminate the following request. Thanks.
Jack Ludwig, retired career Baltimore
County Fire Department, has an urgent need.
Jack is in full kidney failure and is
currently on dialysis. He needs a KIDNEY TRANSPLANT. He is an excellent
candidate for a successful transplant from a live donor. Live donor kidneys are
more successful in many aspects of transplant that those from cadavers. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9381544)
The whole process of donating and
receiving is much simpler and less risky than in the past. In most cases the
surgery is performed laparoscopically,
and because of that the hospital and recovery times are short. We were quite
surprised when the doctors told us the people who donate kidneys actually live
LONGER than non-donors.
We ask for your prayers that God's
will would be accomplished in this.
We are asking if you would consider
just getting educated about this. You may eventually decide you don't want to
donate, or aren't a suitable candidate, but your education may prompt someone
else to consider.
Please let us know if you would
consider getting educated, and we will put you in touch with the proper people
at Hopkins. You can contact us via e-mail at
jandmludwig@comcast.net,
or our home phone is 410-526-7865.
Thanks.
Mel and Jack Ludwig
