Email conversation with City Fire Officers Union President Steve Fugate, September 2007:
Yes indeed, two years. Time flies when you're having fun! And yes, a SIGNIFICANT number of our members (both Locals) took the opportunity to do the scan after my "story" got out. It was common knowledge that I ran every other day and that I had NO signs or symptoms at all. In fact, the ONLY reasons I had the scan myself was to encourage others as there was some genuine reluctance and concern about confidentiality. Completely healed and I can do anything I want though I still can't dance. In fact, I had the surgery on September 21, 2005 and [less than two months later] ran a 5-K for the Arthritis Foundation (my daughter, Shannon, works there) on November 19, 2005. Just did the 9-11 Run To Remember and actually took nearly a minute off of my time from last year. I am VERY lucky to have caught my problem. My Cardiac Surgeon said there are generally two ways to identify the kind of blockage that I had: Cardiac Catheterization (which I would not have had absent the scan) or an autopsy. I'll take option "A" any day! Stephan G. Fugate, President IAFF Local 964
ABSOLUTELY! I have done my very best to be the "poster child" of this issue and I am convinced that very non-invasive scan saved my life or, at the very least, saved me from debilitating consequences. Stephan G. Fugate, President IAFF Local 964 |
