How Do I Get A Job as a Fire Fighter, EMT, or Paramedic?

A career with the Baltimore County Fire Department offers an opportunity for boundless professional and personal growth while providing a vital public service. Applicants meeting the minimum requirements are eligible for entry-level fire or emergency medical services positions.

All new hires should expect to remain in the classification for which they were hired for the entire probationary period. Applicants are not required to possess any certificates or certifications for probationary, entry-level firefighter or EMT positions; certifications are required of applicants for paramedic positions.

The required minimum qualifications are:

  • Must have a high school diploma or an appropriate high school equivalency at the time of appointment (you do not need a diploma or equivalency to apply).
  • Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a non-commercial, class C Maryland driver's license with no more than four points.
  • Must be at least 18 years old at time of appointment.
  • Must pass a physical examination, comprehensive background examination and a drug test.
