Annual
9/11 Golf Tournament
Co-Hosted by IAFF Local 1311
2008 Letter
Dear Brothers & Sisters,
In 2002,
Pete Latreille and Dale Winter felt the need to spend September 11th
with other fire fighters, remembering what had happened on that day the year
before. That year they played golf and talked … a lot. They reflected on what
had happened on 9/11, and how to honor those
343 fire fighters who had made the ultimate sacrifice. That day began the
tradition of gathering fire fighters every September 11th to spend
time together, play golf, and pay tribute to our fallen brothers from FDNY.
Every year the numbers have grown.
This year they felt they could do more.
With the devastation that cancer has on our department and nationwide, it was
decided to raise money for cancer research, and to donate that money in the
names of the 343. The organization they chose is called
The V Foundation, a charitable cancer
research program begun by the late famed basketball coach Jim Valvano, NC State.
During one of Jim's final interviews he stated, “I want to help every cancer
patient I can now. I don't know if I can handle that, but it's the only
conceivable good that can come out of this.” Now we can help to carry on that
tradition as well.
We are sending five player
registration forms
and five
sponsorship applications to each station. Please post this letter on the
Union Board, and feel free to make copies of the forms to distribute.
September 11th is a special day
for all fire fighters, a day of reflection, sorrow, and pride. We hope you can
join us, whether in person or in financial support.
Fraternally,
Michael K. Day Sr.
President
